Growing Bicultural Practice learning modules

Five online self-paced learning modules to support overseas trained teachers gain a deeper understanding of Te Whāriki, and how to implement this curriculum in their teaching practice.

These five online self-paced learning modules were developed to support overseas-trained teachers to gain an understanding of teaching practice that gives practical effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki. The modules also offer a good refresher for all early learning kaiako.

The five modules provide an

  • introduction to Tikanga Maori
  • introduction to Te Reo Māori
  • introduction to culturally responsive pedagogy
  • introduction to Te Whāriki
  • introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi.

These modules were developed by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and Otago University and have been adapted for early learning kaiako by Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood New Zealand.

Each module will take around 30 to 40 minutes to complete.

Before you start the modules

The modules are on the Education Learning Management System.

  • While you can access the modules as a guest, to get the best experience from the modules, you will need an Education Sector Logon (ESL). An ESL will enable you to complete the modules at your own pace, save progress, and have a record of learning for professional learning and development.

  • You can download an ECE user request form to complete: Education On-line services access for Early Childhood (.pdf).
  • Once logged in (or as a guest) you will need to select the Te Whāriki tile in the Education Learning Management System.
