Pepehatia!
Pepehatia! is a suite of resources to support kaiako and tumuaki to understand the subtleties of pepeha and mihi. Teaching and learning about and through pepeha and mihi relates to the bicultural foundations of Te Whāriki and the vision that all mokopuna will grow up strong in their identity, language, and culture.
Pepehatia! is a beautiful suite of teaching and learning resources that are creative and engaging, of which an online course on the Ako Education Learning Management System is an essential component. Pepehatia! includes:
- Pepehatia! e-learn modules for kaiako to deepen understanding of the tikanga, concept, and purpose of pepeha.
- Pepehatia! Reflection Guide featuring reflective prompts and te reo Māori word lists for those new to or learning te reo Māori.
- Pepehatia! Blackline Illustrations for mokopuna for each significant feature encountered in pepeha (e.g., maunga). Each card is accompanied by a vocabulary sheet featuring English, te reo Māori, and NZ Sign Language.
- Pepehatia! Notes for Kaiako - a printable document to support professional practice at an individual and service level.
We have included a picture of the kaitiaki of Pepehatia – Mokomoko. Mokomoko helps to guide people through Pepehatia!

Before you start the modules
The modules are on the Education Learning Management System.
- While you can access the modules as a guest, to get the best experience from the modules you will need an Education Sector Logon (ESL). An ESL enables you to complete the modules at your own pace, save progress, and have a record of learning for professional learning and development.
- You can find further information about How to get an Education Sector Logon at the Education Applications and Online systems website.
- You can download an ECE user request form to complete: Education On-line services access for Early Childhood (.pdf).
- Once logged in (or as a guest) you will need to select the Te Whāriki tile in the Education Learning Management System.
Watch the video to see how the modules work and give you a taste of what is available on the Learning Management System.
